No Man’s Land

Mark Jennett and Jennifer Maidman

The world of popular music, where women can be strong and  men can cry, has often been the cultural space in which  restrictive norms and stereotypes around sex, gender and age are de-constructed and occasionally  transgressed completely. Mark Jennett and Jennifer Maidman have been exploring how their own identities were shaped by artists they saw and heard as they grew up in the sixties and seventies. Their live performance piece re-interprets some well-known tunes from an LGBTQ perspective and also includes an original song about growing up during a time when the word ‘transgender’ had yet to be invented.
